Norway selects Starlink for military use

by Nadarajah Sethurupan

Norway’s government has contracted for Starlink access for its military, police and security agencies under a satellite communications deal worth up to NOK 450 million (€42.7m). The order is handled by Norway-based satellite specialist supplier Marlink.

The Starlink agreement covers usage by:

  • Norwegian Armed Forces
  • Police
  • Police Security Service (PST)
  • National Security Authority (NSM)

Norway’s military reportedly already has 180 active Starlink subscriptions for email, internet access and personnel welfare.

The order has been supplied via Marlink, a Norway-based satellite communications provider, and the agreement includes several satellite networks and specifically requires access to Starlink.

It is not known the length of the Marlink/Starlink contract, or its value. Norway is part of the European Space Agency/European Commission’s IRIS2 scheme for a fleet of satellites for military/government usage which will come of stream towards the end of this decade.
